Golden Bears Send Two to Singles Quarters at Bulldog Classic

FRESNO, Calif. - The California men's tennis team will be represented by juniors Bozhidar Katsarov and Zach Gilbert in separate singles flight quarterfinals at the 2009 Fresno State Bulldog Classic. The two Golden Bears advanced by winning their match in the round of 16 at the Wathen Tennis Center. As one of four fifth-seeded players in A Flight singles, Katsarov received a first-round bye before he defeated Alex Daruty of Nevada, 6-4, 6-2. In B Flight singles, Gilbert went 6-2, 6-4 in a win over Ola Bakke of San Francisco in the round of 32 before he fought back to get a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over Nico Bjerke of Oregon in the round of 16.
Freshman Riki McLachlan won his opening-round match in A Flight singles as he defeated Blake Wardman of Cal Poly, 6-3, 6-4. McLachlan went up against fifth-seeded Thai Tu of San Francisco in the round of 16 and was turned away in the third set, as he fell 4-6, 7-5, 6-1.
After getting a first-round bye, third-seeded freshman Christoffer Konigsfeldt lost a heartbreaking three-setter to David Ayoun of Fresno State. Konigsfeldt blew Ayoun away in the first set with a 6-1 score but the Bulldog responded with a 6-4 win in the second set before forcing Konigsfeldt to a third-set tiebreaker where the first-year Bear fell, 7-5. Konigsfeldt rebounded to win his consolation match and advanced to the consolation quarterfinal with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Karl Paaro of Pacific.
In B Flight singles action, top-seeded senior Bijan Hejazi received a first-round bye but came up against San Francisco's Rainer Nachbauer in the next round. The two split sets before Nachbauer came away with a 6-0, 2-6, 6-4 three-set win. In the first round, sophomore Sky Lovill got a 6-2, 6-2 win over Torsten Keil-Long of UC Davis. Lovill went up against third-seeded Vegard Veskimagi of Pacific, who pulled out a three-set victory over the second-year Bear, 5-7, 7-5, 6-3.
In round of 16 A Flight doubles matches, Gilbert and Lovill teamed up to take out the second-seeded duo of Daruty and Wessim Derbel of Nevada, 8-5, to advance to the quarterfinals. Cal's two other tandems fell in 8-6 losses. The third-seeded freshman duo of Konigsfeldt and McLachlan was edged by Benjamin Recknagel and Lucas Sudow of UCSB; and Hejazi and Katsarov were upset by Joao Noriguiera and Kirill Sinitgsyn of Fresno City College.
