Six Bears Advance to Singles Quarterfinals at Nike Invitational

BERKELEY - The California women's tennis team enjoyed success to the tune of 17 victories on its first day of tournament competition at the Cal Nike Invitational at Hellman Tennis Complex and the Channing Tennis Courts. The Golden Bears pushed six players into Saturday (Oct. 3) singles quarterfinal matches--three in the Gold Flight and three in the Blue Flight. Three Cal tandems also earned quarterfinal spots in doubles--two in the Gold Flight and one in the Blue Flight.

As the top seed in Gold singles, No. 4-ranked sophomore Jana Juricova claimed a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Julia Hansen of Pacific in the round of 32 and a 6-1, 6-2 win over USC's Leyla Entekhabi in the round of 16. No. 18-ranked and fourth-seeded junior Marina Cossou earned a 6-4, 6-2 win over No. 97-ranked McCall Jones of Brigham Young before advancing to the quarters with a 6-2, 6-3 win against Alessandra Ferrazi of Minnesota.

No. 26-ranked junior Mari Andersson held the fifth seed in Gold singles and advanced to the quarterfinal with two wins as well, her last over Michelle Brycki of Arizona State, 6-2, 6-2. Sophomore Stephany Chang got through the round of 32 with a 6-3, 6-2 win over BYU's Megan Price but fell to seventh-seeded, No. 68-ranked Micaela Hein of Arizona State. Freshman Nelly Radeva dropped a 6-2, 6-4 match to the sixth seed, No. 37-ranked Andrea Remynse of UCLA in the round of 16 after winning 6-2, 6-1 over Herzyl Legaspi of UC Davis.

The Bears swept through the first round of Blue Flight singles matches, dropping just one game in six sets of play. Top-seeded freshman Annie Goransson defeated Andrea Gaitan of San Francisco, 6-0, 6-0; eighth-seeded senior Kasia Siwosz logged the same score in a match against Elle Carney of Brigham Young; and freshman Tayler Davis got a 6-0, 6-1 win over San Francisco's Jessy Mekpoh. The three also advanced to the quarterfinals with wins in the round of 16. Goransson took out BYU's Elizaveta Ezhova, 6-2, 6-2; Siwosz won a 6-2, 6-1 match against Maggie McGeorge of Santa Clara; and Davis came away with a three-set win against the fifth-seeded Deborah Armstrong of Long Beach State. In the White Flight singles quarterfinal, sophomore Catalina Visico surrendered a 6-1, 6-2 win to Andie Young of BYU.

In Gold Flight doubles play, Cal's No. 2-ranked tandem of Andersson and Juricova held up their No. 1 seed and defeated Kimi Cox and Kacie Wagner by an 8-4 count in the round of 16. Cossou teamed up with Goransson to get an 8-2 win over Christina Goehl and Hansen of Pacific. In Blue Flight doubles, Davis and Siwosz walked away with an 8-1 win against Santa Clara's Alexandra Zaniewski and Isabella Hoy but Cal's top-seeded duo of Chang and Radeva fell in an 8-6 loss to Armstrong and Anais Dallara of Long Beach State. Visico teamed up with Mary Chamaki of Santa Clara in the White Flight doubles round-robin to get an 8-4 win against Gaitan and Alana McMahon of San Francisco. Visico's doubles match will not count as an ITA result.
