Drabble, Obenaus Start Fall With Victories
Oct. 4, 2009
TULSA, Okla. - UW's Derek Drabble and Tobi Obenaus got the 2009-10 men's tennis season off on a positive note this weekend with some solid results at the ITA All-American Championships hosted by the University of Tulsa at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
Drabble and Obenaus were both entered in the prequalifying singles bracket, where players begin a long run to attempt to make the qualifying draw and then potentially the main draw, which begins this coming Thursday and already includes UW junior Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan.
Now UW's lone senior, Drabble won his opener on Saturday against Ryan Hamning of Cleveland State. The South African took the first set, 6-4, lost the second in a tiebreak, but then won the third-set super-tiebreak, 10-5 to advance. This morning, Drabble dispatched Milos Romic of Bradley, 6-2, 6-2 setting up an afternoon match against Antonio Lastre of Mississippi State where the winner would move on into the qualifying rounds. Lastre, though, came through with a 6-3, 6-2 win.
Obenaus, entering his junior season, had a third-set super-tiebreak win of his own in Saturday's opener. He defeated Zeyad Montasser of Western Michigan, 2-6, 6-3, (11-9). This morning, Obenaus was ousted by 15th-seed Louis Cant of Mississippi State, 6-3, 6-3.
Drabble will remain in Tulsa to compete in the qualifying doubles draw with Nedunchezhiyan.
