Two Cats Fall in ITA All-American Tourney
Oct. 4, 2009
TULSA, Okla. – Arizona’s two representatives in pre-qualifying singles action in the D’Novo ITA All American tournament were both ousted today as Jason Zafiros and Andres Carrasco each lost their third round matches.
Zafiros, who yesterday knocked off Trevor Horstman of Oklahoma State to advance to play Sunday, was defeated in straight sets by Tucker Vorster of Ole Miss, 6-3, 6-3. Tucker would go onto earn a bid into tomorrow’s qualifying bracket after winning his ‘finals’ match over Hawaii’s Leo Rosenberg.
As for the Wildcats’ other pre-qualifying competitor, Carrasco looked to be rolling against Western Michigan’s Michael Calderone. The junior from Barcelona took set one 6-3, but Calderone would come back and win his set, 6-3, to force a third set tiebreaker. In the tiebreaker, Calderone maintained the upper hand and defeated Carrasco 10-2.
“I thought both our guys played well against two tough opponents today,” said head coach Tad Berkowitz. “The competition level in this tournament is always extremely high. We’ll look for Jay (Goldman) to battle in the main draw this upcoming weekend.”
With the exit of Carrasco and Zafiros in singles play, Jay Goldman remains as Arizona’s lone singles participant at the ITA All American tournament. The Worcester, Mass. native received a bid into the main draw and will await his opponent after qualifying wraps up on Wednesday. The main draw of the tournament will begin Thursday and run through Sunday.
The Cats also still have the possibility of a doubles team competing in qualifying doubles play. Andres Arango, who initially was slotted to team with Carrasco in doubles, did not make the trip, but Goldman or Zafiros could possibly fill in.
