Oct. 4, 2009
SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Oregon State women's soccer team cruised to a 3-0 victory over UNLV in the finale of the Aztec Classic on Sunday. The shutout victory improved Oregon State to 8-2-1 on the season while UNLV fell to 4-4-4 with the loss.
The Beavers got on the board early as Melinda Ingalls connected on her third goal of the season in the 10th minute. The sophomore forward corralled a loose ball in front of the net and blasted it past the keeper to give Oregon State all the scoring it would need.
Leading 1-0 at the half, Oregon State would put the game away with a pair of goals early in the second half. In the 51st minute, Melissa Peck took a pass from Red Nixon and headed it into the goal to give Oregon State a two-goal advantage. The goal was the third of the season for the senior as Nixon picked up her second assist of the year.
Sophomore Ashley Seal would finish the scoring in the 66th minute as she blasted a shot from 40-yards out and found the upper-right hand corner of the net for her team-leading fourth goal of the season.
The three goals were more than enough for goalkeeper Ashley Wood and the Oregon State defense as the Beavers recorded their fourth shutout this year. Wood made three saves in goal for her second shutout as Oregon State lowered its goals against average to 0.62 for the year.
Alicia Lugo took the loss for UNLV, allowing three goals while making four saves. Oregon State held a decided 16-6 edge in shots while UNLV held a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Oregon State improved to 1-0-1 all time against the Rebels as the 8-2-1 non-conference record is the best for the Beavers since the 2001 season.
Oregon State will return to action on Friday, Oct. 9, when the Beavers host Stanford in the Pac-10 Conference opener at 7:00 p.m.
