Huskies Fifth After Day One At Edean Invitational
Oct. 5, 2009
SAMMAMISH, Wash. - The Washington Huskies shot a combined 22-over 310 on Monday and are in fifth place after the first round of the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational. Junior Anya Alvarez and redshirt freshman Brittany Tallman each shot a 3-over 75 at Sahalee Country Club to lead the Huskies and are tied for seventh.
Washington is 14 strokes behind the team leader California, who shot a 8-over 296 on the day. San Francisco (+13, 301) is second, followed by Stanford (+20, 308) and San Jose State (+21, 309).
San Francisco's Natasha Podmore is alone in first place after shooting an even par 72. Five others are tied for second at 1-over 73.
'It was frustrating, we know we didn't play as well as we could,' said Husky head coach Mary Lou Mulflur of the Huskies season-opening round. 'But there were a lot of positives on the day and most of the teams were playing their second or third round of the season.'
The story of the day for the Huskies was the emergence of Tallman, who redshirted last season after surgery on her left wrist. The Issaquah High School graduate strung togehter four birdies from holes 8 through 13 to go 1-under at one point and find herself on top of the leaderboard.
Down the stretch, the pressure got to Tallman, playing in her first collegiate tournament. She double-bogeyed No. 15 and bogeyed 17 and 18.
'I've been looking forward to playing for about two years now,' said Tallman after the round. 'I had all the momentum after birdieing 13, but on 15, I started to protect my score and I ended up doubling that hole. I was getting to the stage of not wanting to mess up my score, which is a part of my (mental) game I need to work on.'
Alvarez, the Huskies top returning leader in scoring average, fought her way back from a slow start and made the turn at even par. She struggled to gain ground on the back nine and was 4-over before carding her fourth birdie of the round -- first on the back nine -- on No. 18.
Sadena Parks was the Huskies next top performer, carding a 6-over 78, but was competing as an individual and did not effect the Huskies' team score. She is tied for 20th entering the second round.
Senior Molly Aronsson shot a 7-over 79 and is tied for 26th, followed by Karinn Dickinson, who shot an 8-over 80 as an individual scorer. Darcie Richmond is tied for 38th at 9-over, followed by Christina Yoon and Katie Saucier at 10-over.
