Oct. 5, 2009
The USC women's tennis team got 2009 action underway over the weekend with Women of Troy seeing competition at the Cal Nike Invitational and at ITA Riviera pre-qualifying events. Four Trojans competed in Berkeley, with Cristala Andrews leading the charge by winning her flight in singles play. Freshman Valeria Pulido reached the semifinals of her flight in Berkeley, while fellow freshman Danielle Lao got three wins in pre-qualifying play for the upcoming Riviera/ITA All-American.
Playing at the 2009 Cal Nike ITA Invitational in Berkeley, Calif., junior Cristala Andrews cruised through five wins, including a three-set victory in the championship match, to claim the singles crown in Flight B. Andrews pinned up decisive straight-set victories in the first three rounds, and delivered a dominating 6-0, 6-2 win over Nevada's Emma Verbenne in the semifinals before taking down Cal's Tayler Davis 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 in the title match. Also playing in Flight B singles in Berkeley was junior Lyndsay Kinstler, who won in straight sets for her first two matches before being edged in there in the quarterfinals by No. 8 seeded Kasia Siwosz of Cal.
Meanwhile, freshman Valeria Pulido and junior Leyla Entekhabi were in action in Flight A in Berkeley. Entekhabi opened with a win before falling to the top seed Jana Juricova of Cal in the Round of 16. Pulido began her Trojan career with two strong wins and then claimed another big one with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 comeback over ASU's top player and the No. 2 seed in the flight, Kelcy McKenna, in the quarterfinals. Pulido would fall to the No. 4 seed Marina Cossou of Cal in the Flight A semifinals.
In doubles play, the Trojans grouped up in Flight A. Andrews and Pulido got a win to start the Round of 16, and fell to the top seeds in the quarterfinals. Entekhabi and Kinstler teamed up as well, falling early in the competition at Cal.
Farther south, another USC freshman was enjoying a good start to her Trojan career as well. Danielle Lao was engaged in the pre-qualifying rounds at UCLA in preparation for the coming Riviera/ITA All-American. Lao got the three wins she needed to move into this weekend's qualifying rounds, where she will join teammates Sarah Fansler and Alison Ramos in singles qualifying. Fansler will also be teamed up with Kinstler for doubles play at the ITA/Riviera action, as will Pulido and junior Maria Sanchez in qualifying doubles this weekend.
