Oct. 6, 2009

SAMMAMISH, Wash. - After two rounds at the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational, the Oregon State women's golf team has moved up to seventh place. The Beavers have shot s two-round total of 636 (324-312) on the par 72 - 6,136 yard Sahalee Country Club.

The 28th annual Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational is a 54-hole, three-day tournament running from Mon., Oct. 5 through Wed., Oct. 7.

The Beavers, who started the day on the 10th hole today, were led by junior Cara Freeman as she came back from carding an 80 on Monday to finish Tuesday's round with a team-best 3-over par, 75. Senior Brittany Stewart shot a 76 and notched a team-high three birdies Tuesday.

'Cara (Freeman) played pretty steady today,' Lakowske said. 'Her play was similar to Monday, but when she got in trouble she saved bogeys rather than doubles. This is a course where you're going to find trouble and the challenge is to minimize the damage.'

Junior transfer Kristina Gargaro carded a second round 80 while sophomore Whitney French shot an 81 and senior Lauren Archer tallied an 83.

California's Pia Halbig took control of the tournament lead Tuesday with a two-day total of (73-73) 146 leaving her one stroke ahead of teammate Emily Childs. As a team, Cal continues to hold the lead at (296-303) 599, while Oregon State cut 12 strokes off of Monday's total to move up to seventh place.

The Beavers' opening round total of 324 has them 28 strokes behind the leader, California (296), but two strokes ahead of Civil War rival, Oregon (326).

'There are birdie opportunities out there,' Lakowske said. 'We've learned a lot about the course in the last three days and I expect continued improvement tomorrow.'

The Beavers resume play Wednesday morning at 9:40 for the final round of play.
