Baseball To Scrimmage Prior To Saturday's Football Game
Oct. 8, 2009
CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Oregon State baseball team, one of the most successful clubs in the last decade, is scheduled to play a scrimmage prior to Saturday's football game against Stanford, which is set for a 4 p.m. start. The baseball team will begin its scrimmage at 11:30 a.m. PT at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field.
The scrimmage will be open to the public and is one of the first opportunities for fans to catch the Beavers in action this season. The club is returning from a 37-19 record a season ago, advancing to the finals of the Fort Worth Regional.
Returning for the Beavers this season is 2009 Freshman All-American Sam Gaviglio, who set the program's freshman record with 10 victories. Other pitchers include All-Pac-10 Honorable Mention award winners Kevin Rhoderick and Tyler Waldron, as well as lefties Tanner Robles, Kraig Sitton and Josh Osich.
Offensively, the Beavers are expected to be buoyed by the returns for Adalberto Santos, Jared Norris and Stefen Romero, with the first two earned All-Pac-10 Honorable Mention honors as well. Overall, the Beavers return six starters from a season ago, with Rob Folsom, John Tommasini and Michael Miller also remaining with the club for the 2010 season.
Notable newcomers for the Beavers this season include Andrew Susac, a catcher who was drafted in the 16th round by Philadelphia this past summer, and Tony Bryant, who was a 25th-round selection by Minnesota.
Saturday's scrimmage is free of charge to the public.
Oregon State was recently named as the 10th-most successful program in the last decade by the Web site College Baseball Today. The Beavers were one of three teams to win two national titles during the decade, and the only to do so in back-to-back years.
