Kecki and Poldma Move Into ITA Main Draw
Oct. 7, 2009
USC men's tennis pushed two more players through to the main draw of the 2009 D/Novo/ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla., this week. Sophomore Matt Kecki and junior Jaak Poldma both cruised through qualifying competition with three wins to punch their tickets to the main event. They join fellow Trojans Robert Farah and Steve Johnson in the singles action in Tulsa, which is set to run Oct. 8-11.
Matt Kecki opened his qualifying stretch with a hard-fought three-setter in which the sophomore beat out Ohio State's Devin McCarthy 6-2, 4-6, 6-4. In the next two rounds, Kecki pinned up straight sets, beating Michigan's Evan King 6-3, 6-1 and then securing his place in the main draw with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Ole Miss player Adrian Skogeng Forberg.
Jaak Poldma made it a run of straight set wins in qualifying singles play. The No. 2 seed in the qualifier, Poldma beat Andrew Crone of UNC 7-5, 6-4 and then went on to get a 6-3, 6-4 win over Nebraska's Calin Paar and a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Tucker Vorster of Ole Miss.
Three other Trojans competed in the All-American qualifying action as well. Sophomore Daniel Nguyen got two wins to start with, but fell in the third round to Oklahoma's Ionut Beleleu. Freshman JT Sundling and senior Jason McNaughton both fell in the first round of qualifying play.
In qualifying doubles action, Nguyen/Sundling picked up the No. 7 seed and opened with an 8-5 victory before falling by the same score to an Ole Miss pair. Kecki/Poldma worked their way to two tight wins, but with spots already secured in singles play the No. 4-seeded pair opted to walk over their third match.
