Hosszu Leads Troy At USC Invitational
Oct. 9, 2009
The USC men's and women's swim teams opened the 2009-2010 season in the USC Invitational, a three-session, two-day meet that kicked off Friday (Oct. 9) as the Trojans faced Cal State Northridge.
The session, competed in long course meters, saw Troy's men's team down the Matadors, 80-66, while the women won 80-64.
After the Trojans swept the 200 relays, USC freshman distance specialist Haley Anderson, a 2009 World Championships participant, won her first collegiate event by taking the 800m free in 8:59.53. On the men's side, junior Kevin Little won the event in 8:46.36.
Katinka Hosszu, a 2009 World Championships gold and silver medalist, began her sophomore campaign with a win in the 200 free in 2:03.30. The time is an NCAA `B' cut, noteworthy for it being so early in the season. Junior Lyndsay DePaul, a 2009 transfer who sat out last year at USC due to NCAA transfer rules, was second in the event in 2:05.83. Senior Zoltan Povazsay, like Hosszu a Hungarian transplant in Los Angeles, won the men's 200 free in 1:55.96.
Freshmen Lili Shiota (1:06.46) and Lolo Blair (1:08.13) finished first and second, respectively, in the 100 back while freshman Alex Lendrum (59.50) took first on the men's side.
Hosszu won again in the 100 fly (1:01.97) with another NCAA `B' cut while freshman Yumi So was hot on her heels in second (1:02.70), less than half a second from an NCAA `B' cut. Freshman Clement Lefert, an Olympian from France, breezed to a win in the men's 100 fly (55.27), posting his first NCAA `B' cut, while freshman Justin DiFederico was second (58.79).
Freshman Christel Simms (27.33), a 2008 Olympian for The Philippines, had the best women's 50 time while sophomore Jeff Daniels' 24.24 was tops for the men.
Hosszu clocked her third NCAA `B' cut with a 2:18.85 in the 200m IM while DePaul's 2:20.12 was also good enough for the same standard. Lendrum's 2:14.50 in the 200 IM was best on the men's side.
Teams will race in short course meters on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at McDonald's Swim Stadium and will follow it up with a short course yards meet at 1:30 p.m.
