Mustain Throws 2 TDs, Harris Returns Pick 100 Yards In USC Scrimmage
Oct. 9, 2009
USC quarterback Mitch Mustain threw a pair of short touchdown passes and cornerback Torin Harris returned an interception 100 yards for a TD to highlight a 56-play intrasquad scrimmage on Friday (Oct. 9) that concluded the Trojans' mid-season bye week.
Mustain, who completed 10-of-12 passes for 141 yards overall, hit wide receiver Garrett Green for a 4-yard touchdown and then threw a 5-yard TD to wide receiver Ronald Johnson on the following series.
Placekicker Jordan Congdon opened the scrimmage with a 42-yard field goal.
In addition to his scoring interception return on the scrimmage's final play, Harris also blocked a field goal, returned a kickoff 45 yards and had 2 tackles.
Leading defenders in the scrimmage, which did not feature live tackling because the players were not in pads, were linebackers Michael Morgan, Chris Galippo and Shane Horton, cornerback Kevin Thomas and safety Jawanza Starling with 3 stops each. Defensive linemen Everson Griffen, Devon Kennard, Derek Simmons and Malik Jackson each had a sack.
The scrimmage was conducted at dawn so USC's coaches could spend the rest of the day and weekend on the road recruiting.
'This whole bye week turned out great, finishing with a good scrimmage,' said ninth-year USC head coach Pete Carroll. 'We got a lot out of it. Mustain looked really good and is throwing the ball well. You can't help but notice him.
'A lot of our younger guys did good things this week. For instance, Harris had a great week and really showed up in the scrimmage.'
No. 7-ranked USC returns to action next Saturday (Oct. 17) when it travels to South Bend to face traditional foe Notre Dame.
