No. 7 Stanford Takes Out No. 25 Washington State, 3-1

STANFORD, Calif. -- The No. 7 Stanford women's volleyball team defeated No. 25 Washington State, Friday, in Maples Pavilion in front of a crowd of 2,540 for the team's Pac-10 home opener. Scores were 25-23, 20-25, 25-22, 25-22, as Stanford improves to 3-1 in the Pac-10 and 10-4 overall, while WSU drops to 3-2 in the conference and 14-2 on the season.

Junior Cassidy Lichtman posted her fifth triple-double of the season, totaling 19 kills, 16 assists and 10 digs for the Cardinal. Junior All-American Alix Klineman led the team with 20 kills, while senior Janet Okogbaa added nine kills and seven blocks. Both teams hit .219 on the night.

Stanford opened the match with a 7-3 lead, which included a kill from Okogbaa and a block by freshman Jessica Walker and sophomore Stephanie Browne. The Cougars would post a 5-1 run to pull within one of the Cardinal at 8-7. WSU would take the lead, 12-11, but Stanford would put up three straight points to regain the lead. The score would tie nine times in the opening set before Stanford would pull ahead as Klineman posted three kills and a block and the Cardinal would take the first set 25-23.

The Cardinal would take an early lead in the second, as Walker recorded a solo block and Lichtman earned three kills. WSU would put together a run of its own, posting seven consecutive points for a 12-8 advantage. The Cardinal would earn four straight kills from Lichtman, Klineman, Walker and Browne to pull within two of the Cougars, but it wouldn't be enough as WSU would put together another seven-point run and capture the second set, 25-20. It marks the first time the Cardinal has dropped a set at home to the Cougars since 2000.

WSU put up four straight points to start the third before Walker put one down for Stanford. Okogbaa would earn another kill as well as a solo block, and Lichtman would get her 10th kill of the match to put Stanford ahead, 6-5. The Cardinal would take advantage of Cougar errors to maintain its lead at 11-9. Stanford would be unable to break away from WSU, holding a 21-19 edge. Two mistakes by the Cardinal would tie the set at 21, forcing head coach John Dunning to call timeout. Out of the break, Klineman would put Stanford ahead once again as she pounded two straight kills. The Cardinal would win the third set, 25-22, capped off by a service ace from freshman Karissa Cook.

Both teams struggled with errors to start the fourth set until Klineman registered two consecutive kills to give Stanford a 9-7 lead. A solo block by Browne would put the Cardinal ahead 11-8. A 5-0 run by Stanford, including Lichtman's 17th kill, would push the Cardinal lead to 17-11. Stanford would go on to win the fourth, 25-22.

The Cardinal faces the third-ranked Washington Huskies, Saturday. First serve is slated for 7 p.m. and the match will be televised by FSN.
