Women's Soccer Falls to No. 1 Stanford in Pac-10 Opener

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Three second half goals by No. 1 Stanford proved to be too much for the Oregon State women's soccer team as the Beavers fell to the Cardinal, 3-0, in front of 1,252 fans at Paul Lorenz Field on Friday night. With the loss, Oregon State fell to 8-3-1 overall, 0-1-0 in Pac-10 play while Stanford remained perfect with the win to improve to 12-0-0, 1-0-0.
Oregon State played the top-ranked Cardinal evenly throughout the first 45 minutes as neither team could grab control of the match. Possession was even throughout the first half as Stanford held a slight 6-5 edge in shots with neither team able to find the back of the goal.
With the score tied at 0-0, Stanford finally managed to break through the Oregon State defense in the 56th minute. On a pass forward from Lindsay Taylor, Christen Press blasted a shot from the top of the box into the lower left hand corner of the net to give the Cardinal a 1-0 lead.
Following the goal, Jayne Eadie nearly tied the game for Oregon State in the 72nd minute, however, her blast from 20 yards out was thwarted by Kira Maker as the Cardinal held on to the one-goal advantage.
With Oregon State pushing forward for the equalizer, Stanford countered and managed to score a pair of late insurance goals to secure the victory. Camille Levin scored in the 83rd minute as Taylor followed with a goal in the 85th minute to give the Cardinal a three-goal cushion.
Oregon State was unable to chip into the lead the rest of the way as the Beavers fell to 0-3 all-time against top-ranked squads.
Chelsea Buckland led the way for Oregon State with five shots as Boyd made three stops in net for the Beavers in the loss.
Maker made two saves in the victory for Stanford as Christen Press led the Cardinal with seven shots.
Oregon State will return to action on Sunday, Oct. 11, when the Beavers host No. 21 Cal at 12:00 p.m.
