Volleyball Drops Match at No. 15 California

BERKELEY, Calif. -- The No. 25 Washington State volleyball team had no answers for No. 15 California and All-American Hana Cutura as the Golden Bears swept the Cougars 25-14, 25-19, 25-20 Saturday afternoon in pacific-10 conference action at Haas Pavilion.
Cutura, a 6-4 senior outside hitter, had 19 kills and hit .567 to lead California (9-6 overall, 2-3 Pac-10) to the 82-minute win. Golden Bears leaders included Correy Johnson with 10 kills (.444), Carli Lloyd had 42 assists, Tarah Murrey's 12 digs and Mindi Wiley contributed four blocks. Cal hit .396 for the match.
Washington State lost back-to-back matches for the first time this season and is now14-3 overall, 3-3 in Pac-10 play. The Cougars had no players in double figures for kills or digs. Cassie Robbins and Brittany Tillman each had six kills to lead the Cougs who hit a mere .158 for the match. Renee Bordelon had 25 assists and Oceana Bush led the team with nine digs. Robbins had a match-high five blocks.
'We haven't had a match like this all year and it was good to get it out of the way and on the road,' WSU Head Coach Andrew Palileo said. 'We didn't play well and Cal did well defensively and passing. We need to go back and work hard and get ready to play another weekend of ranked teams at home.'
Cal jumped out to an 18-9 lead in the first set and transitioned it to a commanding 25-14 win. The Bears hit .630 as a team with 20 kills on 27 attacks with only three errors in the first set.
The Cougars were down by three, 20-17 in the second set but Cal out-scored WSU five to two to take the 25-19 win.
The third set saw California ahead 19-16 when the home team went on a strong seven to three scoring run to claim the set 25-20.
WSU hosts No. 13 USC (13-4, 2-3) Friday, Oct. 16, and No. 16 UCLA (13-5. 3-2) Saturday, Oct. 17. Both matches begin at 7 p.m. in Bohler Gym.
