Whitaker, Mileisyte Lead Crimson To Victory
Oct. 10, 2009
PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State University juniors Talor Whitaker and Rugile Mileisyte were the top scorers in today's field, leading their WSU Crimson team to a 118-78 victory over the WSU Gray squad Saturday at Gibb Pool.
Whitaker picked up a first place finish in both the 50 and 100 breaststrokes and finished with a meet-best 26 individual points, while Mileisyte earned a victory in the 50 and 100 backstroke. Both were part of a 400 medley relay team that took first in the opening event of the day. Michaela Ahlin, a senior from Tyreso, Sweden, led the Gray team with 21 points.
Both Ahlin and Mileisyte are coming off appearances at NCAA Championships at the end of last season, as well as the 2009 World University Games in Belgrade, Serbia this summer. Ahlin's highlight of the games was 19th place finish in the 400 freestyle. Mileisyte set a Lithuanian national record at the games in the 50 backstroke with a time of 29.58.
'I am excited about having two returners that went to NCAA's last year and the rest of the team back in better physical shape than they were at the start of the season last year,' said Cougar Head Coach Erica Quam. 'It is exciting adding the group of seven freshmen to the mix, they are pushing people in workouts and stepping up and I think they will add a whole new dimension to our team.'
Shelbi Luchini ranked fifth on the individual scoring list and was the top freshman at the event with 14 points competing for the Gray team.
'It is really fun to have all the alumnae back. It really means a lot to me that they travel from all over to make it back for an even like this. They come back and bring a lot of spirit and traditions with them,' said Quam.
WSU will open its regular season Oct. 17, when it travels to Boise, Idaho to compete in a dual meet against Boise State.
