USC's Ninth Straight Win Nets Kristin Olsen All-Time Lead In Shutouts
Oct. 11, 2009
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. - The No. 14 USC women's soccer team made it another dominating day at McAlister Field as the Women of Troy pinned up a 2-0 win over visiting Arizona on Sunday afternoon in front of a crowd of 833 fans. Several shining moments came through in the victory today, including a new top honor for senior goalkeeper Kristin Olsen. Already USC's leader in career wins, Olsen has now taken over the No. 1 spot as USC's all-time leader in career shutouts with 26. Today's win was the fourth straight shutout victory for Olsen and the Trojans, and also runs USC's win streak out to nine to match last year's longest stretch of victories. USC is now 10-3-0 overall and has a 2-0-0 start to Pac-10 play, while Arizona moves to 3-8-1, 0-2-0.
Dealing the winning blow for the Trojans once again was junior Alyssa Dávila, who scored in the 30th minute to net her sixth goal of the year and ninth game-winner of her Trojan career to rank No. 4 overall. Dávila was on the field for barely three minutes before she knocked in the winner. Deep in Arizona territory on the left sideline, Megan Ohai sent in a short throw-in for Ashley Freyer. Freyer pushed the ball back to Ohai, who slipped through defenders on the attack and sent the ball to the far post. Dávila was there and drilled through the score to take USC ahead 1-0.
In order to secure that goal as a game-winner for Dávila, the Women of Troy had to get right back to work. An insulation goal two minutes later did the trick. Marihelen Tomer pushed a quick corner kick in to Brittany Kerridge and Kerridge sailed a cross into the box for Samantha Johnson, who blasted in the header for the freshman's fourth goal of the year. Now up 2-0 at 31:57 in the match, the Trojans maintained control in the half to hold that lead going into halftime.
In the second half, Arizona opened with its most dangerous look on goal as Ariel Boulicault got a head on a Samantha Drees corner kick. The header forced Olsen into a leaping save to help hold that shutout intact. The USC back line stymied further Wildcat chances down the stretch, while Arizona also managed to turn away the Trojans' advances with help from a pair of saves by Wildcat goalkeeper Devon Wharf. That kept the second half scoreless at both ends as USC's balanced gameplan earned the Women of Troy a 2-0 win.
USC now carries a nine-game win streak into next week's Pac-10 competition, which takes the Trojans on the road for a 7 p.m. clash with top-ranked Stanford on Friday (Oct. 16) and then a 1 p.m. game against ranked California on Sunday (Oct. 18).
