LAS CRUCES, N.M. -
The Oregon State women's golf team is tied for fifth place after the opening round of play Monday at the Price's 'Give `Em Five' Intercollegiate hosted by New Mexico State. The Beavers are nine shots off the pace, behind UC Irvine going into day two.
'We're nine shots back, so we have our work cut out for us, but this is definitely a scorable golf course for us,' head coach Rise Lakowske said. 'We didn't finish well today and had a couple doubles on the last hole coming in and that hurt us a little bit. We've got a couple holes we need to devise a new game plan on.'
On Monday, the first day of the three day tournament, teams played 18 holes on the NMSU Golf Course, a par-72, 6,193 yard course.
Leading the way for the Beavers was junior Cara Freeman and sophomore Elyse Okada, each of whom shot 3-over-par 75's and are tied for 14th, six strokes behind a triumvirate of leaders - Hannah Burke of Baylor, Christine Wong from San Diego State, and Joy Trotter of UC Irvine.
Sophomore Whitney French also delivered a solid round shooting a 4-over-76 to tie for 26th. French's day was all the more impressive considering she arrived in Las Cruces late after teammate Christy Fogerty was sidelined due to illness.
'Cara (Freeman) can definitely score on this golf course because of her length and so can Whitney (French),' Lakowske said.
The Beavers' opening round total of 303 has them tied with Baylor and trailing UC Irvine (294), Idaho (296). Fresno State (298) and San Diego State (300).
'Overall we had a pretty good day,' Lakowske said. 'We just need to keep chipping away and I think we can shoot even par these next couple days.'
