Freshman Leads Cougars In California
Oct. 12, 2009
FAIRFAX, Calif. - The Washington State men's golf team is in 11th place after the first day of the Alister Mackenzie Invitational at the par-71, 6,708-yard Meadow Club.
Hank Frame finished the day with seven birdies and was the top Cougar finisher after two rounds. The freshman was also the most consistent WSU player, posting an even-par 71 in the first round, followed by a career-low score of 70 during the afternoon round. The two-round total of 141 put Frame just outside the top 25, in a tie for 26th.
Senior Kevin Tucker got off to a hot start, carding a 67 (-4) in the opening round, but slipped to even par (142) after 36 holes. Junior Nick Ellis joined his teammate at even-par for the day after posting 72 (+1) in the first round, and a 70 (-1) to end the day. The pair sits in a tie for 31st heading into the final round Tuesday.
'We did not play as well as we hoped we would in a very strong field,' said WSU Head Coach Walt Williams. 'Ellis and Frame had solid rounds but we needed a breakout score in the afternoon but were not able to get the putts to fall.'
Tuesday's final round is scheduled to begin with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. Check www.golfstat.com for live scoring.
Heavy rainfall is predicted in Fairfax tomorrow, which could lead to standing water on the greens, ending the tournament even if 18 holes are not completed.
