Volleyball Up To No. 18

Oct. 12, 2009

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Arizona volleyball team bounced back this past weekend and defeated Oregon State on Friday night and No. 11 Oregon on Saturday to even its conference record at 3-3.  For its efforts, the team moved up four places in the AVCA weekly poll to No. 18 overall.

The Cats recorded match season-highs in kills (64), attempts (188), assists (58), and digs (96) in Friday evening’s five-set tilt against the Beavers.  Tiffany Owens put up 18 kills and 23 digs while Whitney Dosty provided a spark off the bench to lift the Cats to the win.

Against the Ducks, UA used its momentum gained the night before and got off to a fast start, winning the opening set, 25-20.  In a well-rounded team effort, five Wildcats posted double-digit kills, a first this season.  Owens again led the bounce, notching her eighth double-double of the season.  She was accompanied by Dosty who had 13 kills, six blocks and five digs.

Seven Pac-10 schools appear in this week’s rankings.  Washington and Stanford are ranked fourth and fifth, respectively.  The are followed by UCLA (12), California (14), Oregon (15), USC (16) and the Cats (18).  Washington State fell out of the rankings after getting swept by the Bay Area schools.

This weekend, the Wildcats make the trip up I-10 to face the rival Sun Devils.  Arizona will be looking to end its long conference road drought. FSN will be televising the match with Karch Kiraly handling play-by-play duties and Holly McPeak as the analyst.
