Beavers Finish Ninth at Price's 'Give `Em Five' Intercollegiate

Oct. 14, 2009

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Cara Freeman fired a 1-over-par 73 to lead the Beavers to a three stroke improvement in the final round of the Price's 'Give `Em Five' Intercollegiate on Wednesday. The Oregon State women's golf team finished ninth in the 18-team field at the New Mexico State University Golf Course, a par-72, 6,193-yard course.

Freeman's 73 Wednesday left her with a three-round total of 224, which tied for 23rd in the field.

The Beavers shot rounds of 303, 303 and a final round score of 300 for a tournament total 42-over par 906. The Beavers led the tournament in par 5 scoring at -12 and finished second in the tournament with 36 birdies. Idaho, which won the tournament, shot 871 in the three day event.

'We were very good as far as scoring on the par fives and led the tournament in birdies,' head coach Rise Lakowske said. 'But we also had too many holes that were poorly managed. I think after the last four events it is coming down to the chipping stats. We need to improve in that area more than any other. Our greens in regulation and fairways hit are outstanding. But when we get in trouble our short game has let us down as well as our course management.'

Other OSU scores included sophomore Whitney French's 227, seniors Brittany Stewart and Lauren Archer with scores of 229 and 231 respectively, and sophomore Elyse Okada's 233.

Oregon State will be back in action Nov. 2-4 for the Turtle Bay Resort College Invitational at Kahuku, Hawai'i.

'We are thankful to have more than two weeks before we go to Hawai'i to improve on these areas,' Lakowske said. 'They are playing well, just not scoring well, and in golf that doesn't cut it. You have to be able to score regardless of how you strike the ball. I believe this team can turn this season around beginning with Hawai'i.'
