Carrasco, Embry, Zafiros, Embry/Metham Win

MALIBU, CALIF. - The Arizona men’s tennis team had a successful first day at the ITA West Regional Championships in Malibu, Calif.  Three Wildcats won three single matches to advance to the second round and one doubles team advanced to the second round.

 

Andres Carrasco was successful in his first round single match.  The junior defeated Sam Gould of UCI in three sets, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3. Carrasco will play Benjamin Recknagel of UCSB in the second round on Friday at 10:30 a.m.   

 

Sophomore Jason Zafiros defeated Charl Wolmarans of USD in two sets 6-2, 6-4.  Zafiros will play Mathieu Forget of UCSB in the second round on Friday at 12 p.m.

 

Junior Geoff Embry defeated Zeke Hindle in two sets 6-4, 6-4 to advance to the second round. Embry will face Dennis Lajola of Hawaii on Friday at 12 p.m.

 

Senior Pat Metham fell to Ivan Lopez 6-1, 7-6.  Metham will play in the consolation singles bracket TBA.

 

In doubles action, the duo of Geoff Embry and Pat Metham defeated Jordan Bridge and Andre Dome of Cal Poly, 8-5. Embry/Metham will face Hugh Clarke and Finn Tearney of Pepperdine in the second round on Friday at 9:00 a.m.   

 

The duo of Carrasco and Zafiros fell to Nikola Bubnic and Charl Wolmarans of USD in a close set 9-8.  

 

Senior Andres Arango will begin his first singles match of the tournament on Friday against Jason McNaughton of USC at 12 p.m in the second round. Arango had a first round bye.

 

Senior Ravid Hazi will begin his singles match of the tournament on Friday against Andreas Weber of Hawaii at 10:30 a.m.  Hazi also had a first round bye.

 

Before their single matches, Arango and Hazi will team up to compete in the second round of the doubles tournament Friday against Aris Andresian and Johan Berhof of LMU at 9:00 a.m. Arango/Hazi had a first round bye.
