Three Wildcats Advance to Third Round

MALIBU, CALIF. – The Arizona men’s tennis team carried over their momentum from yesterday’s matches to the second day of the ITA West Regional Championships in Malibu, Calif. Three Wildcats won their singles matches to advance to the third round and one doubles team advanced to the quarterfinals.
In single’s action, Arango defeated Jason McNaughton of USC in two sets, 6-2, 6-1 to advance to the third round. Arango will play Jose Sierra-Short of SDSU on Saturday at 12 p.m.
Junior Andres Carrasco topped Benjamin Recknagel of UCSB in two sets, 6-4, 6-1 to advance to the third round. Carrasco will play Matt Brooklyn of UCLA on Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
Jason Zafiros was the third Wildcat to advance to the third round. Zafiros downed Mathieu Forget of UCSB in two sets, 6-1, 6-2.
Junior Geoff Embry fell to Dennis Lajola of Hawaii in three sets, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3.
Senior Ravid Hazi fell in his first singles match of the tournament to Andreas Weber of Hawaii 6-0, 6-1. Hazi will face Blake Wardman of Cal Poly in the third round of the consolation bracket on Saturday at 9:00 a.m.
In the singles’ consolation bracket senior Pat Matham advanced to the third round. His opponent Kalim Stewart of UCLA couldn’t compete in the match due to injury. Metham will face Alex Moreno of Pepperdine on Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
In doubles action, the duo of Arango and Hazi advanced to the quarterfinals. Their opponent, the duo of Nick Meister and Kalim Stewart of UCLA withdrew due to injury. Arango and Hazi will face Robert Farah and Steve Johnson of USC in the quarterfinals on Saturday at 9:00 a.m.
In other doubles action, Geoff Embry and Pat Matham lost to Hugh Clarke and Finn Tearney of Pepperdine 8-4.
