Oct. 16, 2009
CORVALLIS, Ore. - A pair of late second-half goals combined with a stellar defensive effort gave the Oregon State women's soccer team a 2-0 win over Oregon in the annual Civil War on Friday night. With the victory, Oregon State improves to 9-4-1 overall, 1-2-0 in conference play as Oregon fell to 8-5-1, 0-3-0.
'It was a great team effort and I couldn't be happier for our players,' head coach Linus Rhode said. 'The team fought extremely hard for the full 90 minutes, stuck with the game plan and came away with a great victory.'
Sophomore Chelsea Buckland broke a scoreless tie late in the game as her goal in the 84th minute proved to be the game-winner. On a pass from Melissa Peck, Buckland chipped the ball over a charging Oregon goalkeeper and into the back of the net from five yards out to give the Beavers the lead. Melinda Ingalls added an assist on the play as Buckland recorded her fifth goal of the season.
The Beavers would then put the game away just 36 seconds later as Ashley Seal connected on a shot from 10 yards out to put a stamp on the win. On a pass from Ingalls, Seal rifled a shot into the lower left-hand corner of the net to give Oregon State a two-goal edge. Peck added her second assist of the evening on the goal as Seal tallied her fifth goal of the year.
The teams played 83 minutes of scoreless soccer before Oregon State found the net as both teams had shots glance off the post earlier in the contest. In the 11th minute, Seal saw her cross-field shot hit off the far post and out of bounds while Scout Libke gave Oregon its best chance at a goal in the 77th minute when her shot bounced off the post before being cleared by the Oregon State defense.
Oregon State controlled possession throughout the final 45 minutes as the Beavers held an 8-5 advantage in shots in the second half. The strong defensive effort allowed Ashley Wood to pick up her third shutout of the season and the fifth of her career.
Wood made three saves for Oregon State to improve to 5-1-0 on the season as Jessie Proulx made one stop in net for the Ducks and took the loss.
For the match, Oregon State held a 13-8 edge in shots while both teams had one corner kick on the evening.
Ingalls led the way with five shots for Oregon State as Kirstie Kuhns and Jen Stoltenberg had three shots apiece to lead Oregon.
The victory was the first for Oregon State over Oregon since a 4-2 win in 2005 as the win gives Oregon State a 3-1 overall edge in the Civil War Series.
Oregon State will return to action on Friday, Oct. 23, at 5:00 p.m. when the Beavers travel to Los Angeles, Calif., to face USC at 3:00 p.m.
