Dawgs Thrive At Mike Hodges Invite
Oct. 16, 2009
OREGON CITY, Ore. - One day before Washington's top groups lace up their spikes at the Pre-National Meet in Terre Haute, another group of UW cross country runners had a stellar day at the Mike Hodges Invite held at Clackamas Community College
Washington ran against teams from Oregon, Portland, Portland State, Xavier, Seattle U., and a number of small local schools. The UW women were third overall and the men took fourth, though the points meant less due to the large number of unattached runners for both squads.
The women placed five runners in the top-10, three of whom ran unattached. Redshirt freshman Kayla Evans had arguably her best day yet as a Husky, placing second overall in a time of 17:56 over the 5,000-meter course. Junior Mo Huber was close behind in fourth-place in 18:03. Three true freshmen then went 8-9-10; Breanna Huschka crossing a few seconds ahead of Grace Green and Alison Ponce. Freshman Justine Johnson (13th) and junior Bailey Schutte (19th) also turned in top-20 showings in a field of 127.
Junior Jordan Swarthout, a veteran of last year's NCAA meet, showed that he's rounding into form with a fourth-place finish in the men's four-mile run. He completed the course in 20:09, three seconds ahead of sophomore David McCary who took fifth in 20:12. True freshman James Cameron crossed ninth overall in 20:23. Freshman Bryan Tibaduiza took 21st and Faisal Abdullahi finished in 32nd-place.
Saturday's Pre-National Meet will be one of the highlights of the season and can be watched live on Flotrack.org.
