Huskies Extend Unbeaten Streak To Eight Games With 2-0 Win
Oct. 17, 2009
TUCSON, Ariz. - The Washington women's soccer team extended its unbeaten streak to eight games with a 2-0 victory over Arizona on Friday in Pac-10 conference play at Murphey Field.
The win is UW's first in conference play this season as they improved to 9-2-2 overall and 1-0-1 in Pac-10. Arizona drops to 3-10-1 and 0-3-0.
The Huskies got two second-half goals, one from Jane Mitchell - her first of the season - in the 57th minute for the game-winner. Senior Nikki Murray added her fourth of the season in the 84th minute to give UW some breathing room. Sophomore Kari Davidson made one save to record her third shutout of the season as the Husky defense limited Arizona to just three shots in the match.
The game was fairly even in the first half, with UW outshooting Arizona 3-2, but the Huskies came out charged up in the second half and Mitchell got the UW on the board with her first goal of the season in the 57th minute, sending in a shot after a deflection to put UW on top.
The Huskies outshot the Wildcats 11-3 in the second period and their persistence paid off again when Murray took a shot inside the box which was saved by the keeper but the senior followed the rebound and knocked it into the back of the net to give her 11 points on the season, one shy of the team lead.
Leading scorer Veronica Perez was held to just one shot in the game but UW was able to get balanced contributions throughout their roster as they have all season. Junior McKenna Waitley had a team-high four shots, while sophomores Alex Webber and Sarah Martinez had three and two shots, respectively, both coming off the bench.
'Any win in the Pac-10 is good, especially on the road,' Washington head coach Lesle Gallimore said. 'We don't have a lot of road games in conference this season but this was a tough one coming on the heels of Arizona's coach resigning. They're a talented team and they were fired up so the first half was dicey. They strung together some passes and we were tentative at first but we changed formations in the second half and that seemed to work better for us. Sunday is going to be tough, we'll see what we're made of.'
The Huskies take the day off on Saturday before a key match-up against No. 24 Arizona State in Tempe on Sunday at 1 p.m.
