No. 1 Stanford Snaps USC's Win Streak
Oct. 17, 2009
The No. 9 USC women's soccer team came up against the nation's top-ranked and undefeated squad in Pac-10 power Stanford on the road on Friday night, and the Trojans were dealt their first loss in 10 games with a 4-0 defeat at the hands of the streaking Cardinal. After a scoreless first half, No. 1 Stanford managed a flurry of goals against the Women of Troy to get the Pac-10 win. USC moves to 10-4-0 overall with the loss - which snapped a nine-game win streak - and goes to 2-1 in Pac-10 play, while Stanford remains undefeated with the win.
USC senior goalkeeper Kristin Olsen had a career-high 13 saves in the loss, making a number of impressive saves including a one-on-one stop in the waning moments of the first half against the high-powered Stanford offense. The USC back line as a whole did an outstanding job in silencing the Cardinal throughout the first half. Stanford was able to generate effective scoring strikes in the second to move into the lead, getting a run of three goals in just over 10 minutes to put USC out of reach in the Pac-10 clash.
USC had some dangerous opportunities in the first half with powerful attacks from Samantha Johnson and Marihelen Tomer, but it was the Cardinal that would break through first with Christen Press' goal in the 53rd minute of the game. Olsen made another impressive save on a Stanford strike, but Press was there for the rebound of the hard shot of Olsen's hands, and Stanford was on the board to stay.
Press would finish with two goals on the night, and Kelley O'Hara registered the other two for Stanford in the win.
USC's next match takes the Trojans to Berkeley for a Pac-10 clash with the No. 17 California at 1 p.m. on Sunday (Oct. 19).
