UCLA Women's Basketball Holds First Official Practice

Oct. 17, 2009

Los Angeles, Calif. - The UCLA women's basketball team kicked off the 2009-10 season with its first official practice on Friday in Pauley Pavilion.

The Bruins return 10 letterwinners, including four starters, from last year's squad that went 19-12 overall and finished in fourth place in the conference. All 10 returners started at least one game last season and combined for a total of 120 starts. Included amongst the returners are the team's Top 4 scorers from last season - All-Pac-10 guards Doreena Campbell (12.9 ppg) and Erica Tukiainen (8.3), Darxia Morris (8.1) and Christina Nzekwe (6.3) - and Pac-10 All-Freshman team member Atonye Nyingifa (6.1).

UCLA added two recruits signed in last year's early period, 6-1 forward/guard Markel Walker from Philadelphia, PA (Schenley HS) and 5-3 point guard Mariah Williams from Aurora, CO (Regis Jesuit HS). In addition, Jasmine Dixon, a 5-11 guard from Long Beach, CA (Poly HS), transferred into UCLA during the 2009 Winter Quarter from Rutgers and will be eligible to play in games in mid-December following the completion of the the 2009 Fall Quarter.

UCLA opens the season with a Nov. 9 exhibition against Master's College at 7 pm in Pauley Pavilion.
