JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. -
After two rounds at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate, the No. 13 Oregon State men's golf team is tied for first place after three Beavers shot sub-par rounds and rank in the tourney's top 10. Senior Diego Velasquez remains in first and opened his lead to three strokes, Saturday.
The Beavers have shot a two-round total of 9-under par (286-281) 567 on the par 72 - 7,147 yard The Ridges Golf and Country Club.
'We played well again today,' head coach Brian Watts said. 'We're right where we want to be heading into the final day. We gave away a few shots again on the finishing holes, but we'll continue to try to clean that up. We're looking forward to tomorrow and we'll keep the same game plan we've had all week.'The 12th annual Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at The Ridges is a 54-hole, three-day tournament running from Fri., Oct. 16 through Sun., Oct. 18.
Senior Mike Barry and sophomore Morten Madsen joined Velasquez in the red Saturday. Barry recorded the field's lowest score of the day with a 5-under par 67 to finish the day in fourth place. Meanwhile, Madsen fired a 4-under 68 to move into a tie for 10th. The Beavers' threesome of sub-par players combined to tally only one bogey, while accounting for 10 birdies and an eagle.
'Those three guys played really solid golf today,' Watts said. 'We need to get the other guys going a little better, but to have those three combine for one bogey is remarkable on this golf course.'
Velasquez, who held a two-shot lead after Friday's first round after shooting a 6-under 66 which has been the low score of the tournament, extended his tournament lead to three strokes with a 2-under 70 Saturday.
The Beavers resume play Sunday morning with their first group going off of the first hole at 10:10 for the final round of play.
