Zafiros Advances to Quarterfinals

MALIBU, CALIF. – The Arizona men’s tennis team started the morning out well with four Wildcats’ winning their singles’ matches, but the Wildcat’s doubles team lost in the quarterfinals of the ITA West Regional Championships in Malibu, Calif.  In the round of 16 later in the day, two Wildcats were defeated in their singles matches, while one Wildcat will compete in the quarterfinals Sunday.


In the round of 32, junior Andres Carrasco defeated Matt Brooklyn in a close three-set match, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1.  In his second match of the day, in the round of 16, Carrasco fell to Nikola Bubnic of USD, 6-1, 6-5.


Senior Andres Arango topped Jose Sierra-Short of SDSU in the round of 32 in two sets, 6-4, 6-3.  In the round of 16, Arango was defeated by Alex Konigsfeldt of UCSB in a close three-set match, 6-7, 7-5, 6-0.


Jason Zafiros was successful in his third day of the tournament.  In his first match, he downed Andre Dome of Cal Poly in two sets, 6-1, 6-2. In the round of 16, the sophomore beat No. 2 Bassam Beidas of Pepperdine in a three-set match, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.  Zafiros advances to the quarterfinal where he will play No. 9 Juan Gomez of SDSU on Sunday at 10:00 a.m.


In the singles’ consolation bracket, senior Ravid Hazi defeated Blake Wardman of Cal Poly 6-2, 6-4 in the third round.  In his second match of the day, Hazi fell to Borja Malet of LMU 6-4, 6-2 


Pat Matham, who also played in the singles’ consolation bracket, beat Alex Moreno of Pepperdine in two sets, 7-6, 6-3.  Like Zafiros, Metham also won his second match of the day.  He beat Jeremy Tweedt of Hawaii in a close three-set match, 4-6, 7-6, 10-5.  Metham advances to the quarterfinals of the consolation bracket and will play Alex Brigham of UCLA Sunday at 10:00 a.m.  


In doubles action, Arango and Hazi fell to Robert Farah and Steve Johnson of USC 8-6.
