ASU Women's Soccer Plays Washington to a 1-1 Tie
Oct. 18, 2009
TEMPE, Ariz. – The Arizona State women’s soccer team was unable to secure its first Pac-10 win of the season on Sunday as it played Washington to a 1-1 tie. The Sun Devils are now 7-4-3 (0-3-1 Pac-10) and Washington is 9-2-3 (1-0-2 Pac-10).
After falling behind in the first half of its 2-1 loss to Washington State on Friday night, the Sun Devils came out as the aggressors and controlled the action for much of the first half. ASU’s persistent attack resulted in the first goal of the game in the 20th minute when freshman forward Bianca Doller took a pass from Alexandra Elston, beat her defender and found the back of the net to give ASU a 1-0 lead. For Doller, it marked the second time in as many games that she scored a goal.
In the second half a role reversal of sorts occurred as the Huskies came out and played with a greater sense of urgency, forcing much of the action to take place on ASU’s side of the field. Washington would tie the game in the 61st minute when sophomore forward Alex Weber was in the right place at the right time to rebound a free kick into the goal.
Doller’s two shots led the Sun Devil attack, which was only able to produce two shots in the game’s final 65 minutes. Sunday’s encounter was a physical one as the two teams combined for 34 fouls (Washington 19, ASU 15).
Freshman goalkeeper Alyssa Gillmore made nine saves for the Sun Devils.
The Sun Devils return to action on Friday (7 p.m.) when they travel to Tucson, Ariz., to face in-state rival Arizona.
