Box Score

TEMPE, Ariz. - Sophomore Alex Webber scored the game-tying goal in the 61st minute and the Washington women's soccer team battled to a 1-1 draw in 99-degree heat against No. 24 Arizona State on Sunday at Sun Devil Soccer Stadium.

The Huskies (9-2-3, 1-0-2) stayed unbeaten in Pac-10 play, while Arizona State is now 7-4-3 overall and 0-3-1 in conference.

UW held a 15-7 shot advantage in the match but Sun Devils goalkeeper Alyssa Gillmore came up with nine big saves to help ASU salvage the tie.

The Huskies fell behind early despite a pair of good looks in the opening minutes, one each by Veronica Perez and Kate Deines. It was the Sun Devils who struck first, however, with Bianca Doller sending in her first goal of the season off an assist from Alexandra Elston in the 20th minute.

UW came out of the second half and took control of the match, getting off six shots in the first 15 minutes and the seventh finally found the back of the net. Junior Jane Mitchell - who had the game-winning goal in UW's 2-0 win over Arizona on Friday - sent a free kick toward the goal and the ball was knocked out by Gillmore, but Webber gathered the rebound and sent it into the back of the net for the equalizer and her first goal of the season.

Each team had one shot in the first overtime and the Huskies had the best chances to score in the second extra period, with Deines getting a good look with just 20 seconds left, but her header from close range was saved by Gillmore.

Husky sophomore Kari Davidson made three saves while Deines and Webber led the Huskies with four shots each.

'I am really proud of how the team played. These are tough conditions for anyone and it was a Sunday game on top of it so I'm extremely proud of how we fought,' Washington head coach Lesle Gallimore said. 'For the first time all season we kind of gave up a bad goal and being down 1-0 at half, we put the shoes to them a bit. We had to be happy with how we played in the first half but we didn't assert ourselves and we did a much better job of that in the second half. We talked a lot lately about anticipating where the second ball would pop out and that's exactly where Alex got her goal.'

'To get a tie on the road in any Pac-10 match is great and this was just a gutsy performance' Gallimore continued. 'Kate (Deines), McKenna (Waitley) and Jane (Mitchell) really fought in the midfield and Lindsey Kasser, Kendyl Pele and Alex Kirk didn't come off the field once. They were truly heroic. For them to not mentally cave in and give up a goal late in the overtime was big.'

The Huskies return home next week to host two nationally ranked teams, first facing No. 18 California on Friday at 7 p.m. followed by a showdown with No. 1 Stanford on Sunday at Noon.
