Trojans Grab Golden-Goal For 3-2 Win At Cal
Oct. 18, 2009
BERKELEY, CALIF. - The No. 9 USC women's soccer team gutted out a golden goal to dash Cal's comeback hopes with a 3-2 victory over the No. 17 Bears in Berkeley. It was the first overtime situation for the Women of Troy, who took a 2-0 first-half lead but saw Cal tie it up in the second. USC regained composure for the next stretch, and Alyssa Dávila punched in the game-winner in the 93rd minute for her second goal of the game to send the Trojans home with the Pac-10 win. USC improves to 11-4 overall with the victory, and goes to 3-1 in Pac-10 play after a conference road split this weekend in the Bay Area. Cal is now 8-5-1, 2-2 with today's overtime decision.
USC's early advantage came in the 19th minute when Marihelen Tomer launched a cross from the end line. Ashley Freyer met the pass and knocked it in to take the Trojans out to a 1-0 lead. Around 12 minutes later, Alyssa Dávila padded USC's lead to 2-0 with a score as she gathered up a long ball sent up from USC goalkeeper Kristin Olsen. Olsen would finish the day with 10 saves - her highest career count in a win - to go along with her help in setting up USC's second goal of the day.
Olsen made five saves in the first half to keep the Bears quiet, but Cal pressed on in the second. Alex Morgan and Miranda White caused trouble for the Trojans by combining for two goals that had the game tied up 2-2 with 12 minutes remaining in regulation. The score held, bringing up USC's first push into overtime this season. Playing in front of a season-high crowd at Cal's Edwards Stadium, the Women of Troy had the last word of the day.
It was Dávila who dealt the winning blow. Barely three minutes into overtime, Carly Butcher sailed in a cross. Dávila timed it right and sent the ball to the back of the net to clinch the win for USC. The two-goal outing marked Davila's third career multiple-goal game and second this season. She leads the Trojans in scoring with eight goals on the year and now has 20 in her career. Davila also climbs up a notch to stand alone at No. 4 all-time in career game-winning goals with 10 - three of which have come this season.
USC now returns home for its final games of the season at McAlister Field. The Trojans will first host Oregon State in a 3 p.m. game on Friday (Oct. 23) before setting up for Senior Day in a matchup with Oregon at 1 p.m. on Sunday (Oct. 25).
