Foles Named Pac-10 POW
Oct. 19, 2009
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. – Arizona sophomore quarterback Nick Foles has been named the Pacific-10 Offensive Player of the Week, the league office announced today.
Foles led the Wildcats to a thrilling come-from-behind victory, 43-38, last Saturday at Arizona Stadium before a Family Weekend crowd of 53, 479. The Austin, Texas, native completed 40-of-51 pass attempts for 415 yards and three touchdowns. He did not throw an interception.
In just his third career start, and first at home, Foles set an Arizona school record by completing 78.4 percent of his passes. The mark was the best for a UA quarterback who had at least 20, 30 or 40 pass attempts.
Foles’ three throwing touchdowns matched his career set in his inaugural start at Oregon State three weeks earlier. His 415 yards passing against Stanford rates No. 8 in Arizona single-game passing history, while his 420 yards in total offense in the game ranks sixth on the UA chart. His 40 completions rank as the No. 2 figure in history behind Willie Tuitama's 42 at California in 2007.
With the Wildcats trailing 28-13 in the second quarter, Foles and the UA offense got the momentum rolling late in the first half before out-scoring the Cardinal 30-10 over the 30:18 of the game. In that period, Foles led the offense on touchdown drives of 89 yards, 80 yards, 80 yards and 92 yards.
Foles leads all quarterbacks in the Football Bowl Subdivision with a 73.9 percent completion rate on his 157 attempts this season. The league’s top passer in efficiency ratings (151.9), Foles has helped raise UA’s total offense to 443.7 yards per game, another figure that leads the Pac-10.
This is the eighth time that an Arizona quarterback has been named the Pac-10 Player of the Week. Tom Tunnicliffe, who won the award three times in his career from 1980-83, is the only Wildcat quarterback to be honored multiple times.
Foles is the second Wildcat to earn a weekly accolade from the Pac-10 this year. Devin Ross was named the Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Week after helping seal a road victory at Oregon State in September.
The Wildcats will be back action this Saturday at Arizona Stadium to host the UCLA Bruins. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. (MST) and the game will be televised live on FOX Sports West/Prime Ticket and FOX Sports Arizona.
