Golfweek picks Diego Velasquez as Player of the Week
Oct. 19, 2009
For the second time in his career, Oregon State senior Diego Velasquez has been selected as the Golfweek Player of the Week.
The senior from Bogota, Colombia ran away with the third victory of his career at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at The Ridges, shooting rounds of 66-70-70 to finish 10-under 206, seven shots better than a group of runner-ups that included last year's NCAA individual champion, Matt Hill from North Carolina State.
'Diego has been playing great golf for more than a month,' head coach Brian Watts said. 'He's been playing phenomenal golf and to beat the No. 1 player in the country is a great accomplishment.'
In addition, to his win in Tennessee last week, Velasquez tied for third at the weather-shortened Alister MacKenzie Intercollegiate at the beginning of the week. Velasquez, who is currently ranked No. 19 by Golfweek, carded rounds of 67-68 to finish 7-under 135 at The Meadow Club.
Oregon State is currently No. 13 this week according to the latest Golfstat rankings. Meanwhile, OSU cracked the Golf World/Nike Golf Division I Coaches' Poll at No. 21 for the first time this year in last week's poll also released Wednesday. The Beavers moved to No. 16 in the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings, which were updated Friday, Oct. 16.
This is the third time an Oregon State golfer has been honored as the Player of the Week by Golfweek. David Yarnes in 2001 and Velasquez last season were previously awarded.
Oregon State returns to action Nov. 9-10 at the St. Mary's College Invitational at Pebble Beach, Calif.
