Oct. 19, 2009
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- Commissioner Larry Scott announced to day that OREGON senior outside hitter Sonja Newcombe has been named the Pac-10 Women’s Volleyball Player of the Week for Oct. 12-18.
In last weekend’s Pac-10 matches against the Bay Area schools, Newcombe led No. 15 Oregon to its first win vs. No. 5 STANFORD since 1989, snapping a streak of 37-straight matches, and its first sweep three-game sweep of CALIFORNIA since 1990. The win against the Cardinal marks the third all-time for the Ducks.
In Friday’s match against the Bears, Newcombe tallied 13 kills and 10 digs while hitting .545. The .545 is her second-highest mark of the season behind her career-high .611 at Portland in early September.
Closing out the weekend against the Cardinal on Saturday, the Lake Arrowhead, Calif., native had a career-tying night posting 26 kills, a personal best set a week earlier against then No. 22 ARIZONA, and registering career-highs in points with 28.5 and digs with 24. It marked her sixth double-double of the season and her 40th-career double-double.
For the weekend, Newcombe led the team in kills (39, 4.88 kps), points (44, 5.50 pps) and digs (34, 4.25 dps), and ranked second in aces (3, 0.38 aps) and assist (8, 0.50 aps).
This is the third-career weekly honor for Newcombe and Oregon’s 14th all-time Player of the Week.
