Zafiros Falls To Close ITA Regional

MALIBU, Calif. - Sophomore Jason Zafiros fell to sophomore Alex Llompart of Pepperdine today in the final day of the singles bracket at the ITA West Regional Championships in Malibu, Calif.
Zafiros fell in the semifinals in two straight sets 6-4, 6-3.
The Bradenton, Fla. native advanced to the final four after competing for five straight days amongst some of the top elite tennis players around the West Coast. He finished with a 5-1 record.
Zafiros incredible run in the tournament began on Thursday in the round of 128. He advanced to the round of 64 after he knocked off Charl Wolmarans of USD in two sets, 6-2, 6-4. On day two, in the round of 64, the sophomore topped Mathieu Forget of UCSB in two sets, 6-1, 6-2 to advance to the round of 32. In day three, Zafiros downed Andre Dome of Cal Poly 7-5, 6-1 to advance to the round of 16. On the same day, he competed against No. 2 Bassam Beidas of Pepperdine where he defeated him in his only three-set match of the tournament. Zafiros won 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 to advance to the final eight. On the fourth day of the tournament, in the quarterfinals he beat Juan Gomez of SDSU 6-2, 7-5 to advance to the final four.
Next up for the Arizona men's tennis team is the UNLV Fall Classic in Las Vegas, Nev. on Friday, Oct. 30th.
