Former Beaver Sammie Stroughter Named NFC Special Teams Player of the Week

Oct. 21, 2009

Corvallis, Ore. -

The National Football League today announced that Tampa Bay Buccaneers rookie wide receiver and former Oregon State standout Sammie Stroughter has been selected NFC Special Teams Player of the Week for Oct. 19.

Stroughter earned the honor after becoming just the third player in Buccaneers’ history to return a kickoff for a touchdown with his 97-yard scamper, matching the longest in team history. The touchdown return came late in the third quarter in the team’s game against the Carolina Panthers.

As a Beaver, Stroughter was a 2008 Pac-10 First Team selection and a 2006 Associated Press Third Team All-American.  He set a school record with three punt returns for touchdowns, and finished third for career receptions (164) and yards (2,653).

Stroughter was one of seven Beavers drafted in 2008, a school record and tied for the second most in the nation.
