Five Trojans To Race At CS Fullerton Invitational
Oct. 22, 2009
The USC women's cross country team, ranked No. 14 in the West Regional, will race in its final regular season meet of the season on Friday (Oct. 23) at the 5K CS Fullerton Invitational in Fullerton, Calif. Among the other team scheduled to run at Fullerton are Pepperdine, Cal Coast, Loyola Marymount, UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara, USD and host CS Fullerton.
USC is sending just five runners to the competition, led by junior Zsofia Erdelyi in her final tune-up before the Pac-10 Championships. The other Trojans set to run at Fullerton are freshmen Christy Ambrosini, Theresa Kurth and Abigail Gregg, as well as junior Allison Rojewski. These runners are looking to make one last impression on USC cross country coach Tom Walsh and earn a shot at representing the Trojans at the NCAA West Regional to be held on November 14 in Eugene, Ore.
'For Zsofia, with an early season minor injury and two weeks of illness, we feel that she is behind schedule, so were are racing her into shape for the Pac-10s,' said Walsh. 'She is slowly getting better and we are hoping one more race will help her fitness and get her ready for next week.'
Senior Chanel Fischetti who has been rehabilitating all season from a stress fracture in her shin suffered during the summer, valiantly tried to run last week at CS Northridge and was able to finish the race. There had been plans to test it again this Friday, but instead the decision has been to shut her down for the season.
'We were hoping Chanel would get one more chance to run during her senior year,' said Walsh. 'She has meant a lot to the program.'
The rest of the USC cross country team in training through this week to prepare for the Pac-10 Championships next week. USC is hosting the conference cross country championships at Sky Links Golf Course in Long Beach, Calif. On Oct. 30.
