SEATTLE - The Husky women's tennis team continues its fall season with the ITA Northwest Regional Championships this weekend in Palo Alto, Calif. hosted by Stanford. Eight Huskies will compete in singles and doubles over the four-day event that kicks off tomorrow, Oct. 23.
The Taube Family Tennis Center will host the event, which in addition to the Huskies features teams from California, Cal Poly, Fresno State, Gonzaga, Nevada, Oregon, Pacific, Sacramento State, Saint Mary's, San Francisco, San Jose State, Santa Clara, Stanford, UC Davis, and Washington State.
Friday will cut the nearly 128 singles players and 64 doubles teams down to 32 in singles and 16 in doubles, and the tourney will progress from there until the finals on Monday, the 26th. The singles finalists and doubles champion at this event earn automatic bids into the ITA National Indoor Championships held next month at Yale.
Junior Venise Chan will be in action for the first time since reaching the semifinals at the ITA All-American Championships two weeks back. Chan, ranked 16th nationally, is the tournament's third-seed and has a first round bye. Also receiving a bye is 9th-seeded sophomore Denise Dy.
In doubles, Ardies and Dy are the draw's No. 3 overall seed, coming off a quarterfinal run at the All-American Championships. They've got a bye into the round of 32. Chan and Malovic, Smith and Xu, and Krlsjanin and Radunovic all have round of 64 match-ups.
