Bruins Pound Ducks, 5-1 in Pac-10 Soccer Showdown
Oct. 23, 2009
LOS ANGELES - Lauren Cheney and Sydney Leroux each scored a pair of goals Friday, as the fourth-ranked UCLA women's soccer team cruised to a 5-1 victory over Oregon in a Pac-10 showdown at Drake Stadium. With the win, the Bruins move to 13-2-1 overall and 4-1 in conference play. Oregon drops to 8-6-1 overall and remains winless in the Pac-10 at 0-4.
UCLA continued its trend of scoring early this year, as the Bruins jumped out to a 1-0 lead in just the fourth minute of play when Leroux punched in her 13th goal of the season on a left-footed strike to the right corner. Summer Williams and Elise Britt were credited with assists on that goal.
The Bruins would tack on two more in the first 21 minutes, as Cheney scored her eighth and ninth goals of the year. Her first goal mirrored Leroux's first strike, as Williams sent a pass over from the right side, enabling Cheney to score on a left-footed shot from the top of the box. Her next goal was also from around the 18-yard mark, this time scoring from the left side to the far right post. Cheney now has 25 game-winning goals in her UCLA career, just one behind school record holders Danesha Adams and Traci Arkenberg.
Following a 3-0 UCLA lead at the half, freshman Zakiya Bywaters scored the Bruins' fouth goal of the night at the 56:17 mark. Cheney beat several players to penetrate the Oregon defense, eventually laying off a perfect pass to Bywaters, who beat Oregon goalkeeper Jessie Proulx with a high shot that bounced off the crossbar and into the goal.
Leroux capped the scoring for UCLA in the 59th minute, heading in a cross from sophomore Amelia Mathis. Leroux now has 30 points this year on 14 goals and two assists.
Oregon was able to avoid the shutout at the 59:17 mark when Jen Stoltenberg tallied her seventh goal of the season after receiving a pass from Kirstie Kuhns.
UCLA outshot Oregon, 15-3 on the evening.
The Bruins return to action on Sunday, hosting Oregon State at 1:00 p.m.
