Golden Bears Set to Host 2009 Wilson/ITA Northwest Regional

BERKELEY - The California men's tennis team is set to host the 2009 Wilson/ITA Northwest Regional Championship this weekend (Friday, Oct. 23, through Tuesday, Oct. 27) at the Hellman Tennis Complex and Channing Tennis Courts. The five-day tournament will produce a singles and doubles champion which will each earn berths to the 2009 ITA National Indoor Tennis Championships from Nov. 5-8, in New Haven, Conn.
The Golden Bears will welcome players from Eastern Washington, Fresno State, Gonzaga, Oregon, Pacific, Portland, Sacramento State, Saint Mary's College, San Francisco, Santa Clara, Stanford, UC Davis and Washington.
Play opens with first-round singles matches on Friday (Oct. 23) at 8 a.m. PT. Top seeds will receive first-round byes and a second round of singles matches will be played on the first day. Losing players from the first round will be automatically entered into a back draw that will play to completion. Saturday (Oct. 24) will feature two rounds of doubles matches and one round of singles main draw matches. The singles back draw will also play two rounds.
Singles round of 16 and quarterfinal matches will be played on Sunday (Oct. 25) with the doubles round of 16 and one round of doubles consolation matches. The singles consolation bracket will go through round of 16, quarterfinal and semifinal matches as well. On Monday (Oct. 26), doubles quarters and semifinal matches take place along with the singles main draw semifinal and the singles back-draw final. Championship finals will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 27, for both the singles and doubles main draws.
Nine singles players ranked in the ITA preseason rankings will be among the field of 120 in the first round of play. Those players are: No. 7 Alex Clayton of Stanford; No. 15 Bradley Klahn of Stanford; No. 32 Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan of Washington; No. 42 Pedro Zerbini of California; No. 76 Richard Wire of Stanford; No. 87 Kiryl Harbatsiuk of Sacramento State; No. 91 Gregory Hirshman of Stanford; No. 96 Ryan Thacher of Stanford; and No. 102 Anton Stryhas of Sacramento State.
The tournament will also feature three ranked doubles teams which include No. 8-ranked Klahn and Thacher of Stanford; No. 16 Harbatsiuk and Stryhas of Sacramento State; and No. 31 Matthew Kandath and Wire of Stanford.
In recent regional championship history, ITA All-American Conor Niland claimed the singles crown in 2003; Pierre Mouillon and Daniel Sebescen won the doubles title in 2006; and Geoff Chizever and Zerbini took home the doubles title in 2008.
