Los Angeles Day One: Where's Albert?
Oct. 23, 2009
What do a Florida Gator and the Oregon State volleyball team have in common?
The answer is everything if you’re traveling with the team down in Los Angeles this weekend. Senior defensive specialist Brittney Belshe brought along a special friend for the weekend as part of possible extra credit for a class. Albert is a long way from home, but he’s found an adopted family in the team. He’s quickly made friends with all of the players, and is always up for a picture.
The Beavers made the trip down to LAX on Thursday evening, but they weren’t alone, as the women’s soccer team, who is also competing against USC and UCLA, was on the same flight. And the swim team is now in Los Angeles, while the football team is soon on its way to LAX.
The weather is gorgeous here, which is a big contrast to what I hear is going on back in Oregon. Clear blue skies, about 80 degrees,
Tonight’s match against No. 18 USC is another “Pink Night,” which also provided t-shirts to the Beavers with the pink ribbon design on the front with the beaver logo. The team talked about wearing the t-shirts for warm-up instead of the usual black shirts. Oregon State has matched up well against the Women of Troy the last couple of seasons and hopefully there will be some Oregon State magic in the Galen Center tonight.
Junior outside hitter Jill Sawatzky, who missed last year’s match against the Women of Troy due to injury, is ready to play tonight and talks about this weekend’s trip.

Hi Beaver fans!
It’s a beautiful afternoon in Los Angeles, Calif., and the team is currently resting before our big match tonight. Our journey to get here started yesterday afternoon, and it ended up being more eventful than I had expected. It turns out that there are three Beaver teams here in LA this weekend – volleyball, women’s soccer and football. We loaded our bus to the airport right beside the OSU women’s soccer team loading their bus to the airport, and we managed to run into them several times since. We met them in the ticket line, at our gate and again on the plane! I guess our large presence was noted by the airline staff since before exiting we got a ‘Go Beavs!’ cheer from the cockpit.
Our trip is also being kept interesting because of Britt’s extra credit school project. Her group decided to let Britt take their professor’s beloved figurine of the Florida Gator mascot (named Albert) on the road with us and have her document his vacation in California. So far, he’s had quite an adventurous trip. She has pictures of him on the bus, having some Jamba Juice and riding the moving walkway in the airport, chilling in his seat on the plane, surfing the web and getting his morning coffee. (To Britt’s Professor: If you’re reading this, don’t worry, Albert is doing just fine!)
After breakfast we watched some video and then headed to practice. Guess who came with us? Albert! He had a great time playing in the ball cart and really held his own at the net. After about an hour we headed back to the hotel to get some homework done and relax before our pre-game meal at 2:30 p.m. After that we’ll go back to the gym for a serve and pass, and then get pumped for tonight’s game against USC.
