No. 23 Bears Blanked by Huskies, 1-0

SEATTLE - The No. 23 California women's soccer lost a 1-0 decision to Washington on Friday night. The Huskies scored with a goal in the 24th minute to improve to 10-2-3 overall and 2-0-2 in the Pac-10 Conference while the Golden Bears fall to 8-6-1 and 2-3-0 in the Pac-10. Cal outshot UW, 8-7.
'This was another tough loss for us tonight,' Cal head coach Neil McGuire said.
UW scored the gamewinner with an unassisted shot from McKenna Waitley. Off a deflection, Waitley took a shot in the box that found the lower right corner of the goal.
The score was her fourth goal of the 2009 season.
Junior forward Alex Morgan paced the Bears with four shots. Cal's first shot on goal came at 36:23 from Morgan.
The 64th minute look promising for Cal as Morgan started it off at 63:12 with a shot that was saved. Six seconds later, Morgan fired again, only it went wide to earn a corner kick, but Cal could not convert.
Senior keeper Gina Pellegrini played the full 90 minutes between the posts for the Bears and made two saves.
Cal forced the UW goalie Kari Davidson to make two stops. In addition to outshooting the Huskies, 8-7, the Bears earned four corner kicks to Washington's three.
The Bears now travel East to Pullman, Wash. to take on No. 20 Washington State on Sunday at 11 a.m. The Cougars (10-4-1, 2-1-1 Pac-10) lost in overtime, 2-1, to No. 1 Stanford on Friday in a rain-soaked match.
