Trojans Fall 2-1 To Oregon State
Oct. 23, 2009
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. - The No. 9 USC women's soccer team came up short in its home match today, as the Trojans were handed a rare home loss with a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Oregon State. The Women of Troy struck first on a goal from Marihelen Tomer, but the Beavers fought back to tie and then win the Pac-10 clash in the second half. The conference loss moves USC's overall record to 11-5-0 and Pac-10 mark to 3-2, while Oregon State goes to 10-4-1, 2-2.
USC seemed in good control of the match in the early goings, working though a few strong attacks on the OSU goal before getting to the back of the net in the 13th minute of play. Karter Haug booted the ball up for Carly Butcher just outside the box. Butcher collected it and slipped a pass wide for Marihelen Tomer, and Tomer drove the ball to the low left and through to take USC ahead 1-0. The Trojan advantage would hold through the half, thanks in part to four saves made by USC goalkeeper Kristin Olsen in the first half.
In the second half, however, the Beavers seemed to refocus and switch the momentum in the match. Eight minutes in, A centering pass from Red Nixon made its way to Melissa Peck at close range. Peck knocked her shot on goal, and Olsen got her hands on it only to see the ball roll through for the tying score. OSU continued to press and interrupt the Trojan play, earning a pair of corner kicks in the half and also setting up for several free kicks for looks on goal. The USC defense stymied those chances, but Oregon State broke through late in the half on a Nixon score to the low right corner to bump the Beavers ahead 2-1 in the 76th minute. In the late minutes of the game, Megan Ohai sailed a flip throw deep into the box. The ball bounced around and then wide for another USC play into the box, but the Trojans were whistled for a foul to steal away that chance to equalize.
Now, USC will regroup and focus in on the coming clash with Oregon. In the Trojans' final home game of the regular season, USC will honor its five seniors in a Senior Day ceremony before the 1 p.m. game against the Ducks on Sunday (Oct. 25) at McAlister Field.
