Dawgs Enjoy Strong First Day At Regionals
Oct. 24, 2009
PALO ALTO, Calif. - The Husky women's tennis team had an impressive first day at the ITA Northwest Regionals hosted by Stanford on Friday at the Taube Tennis Center. UW's top three doubles teams all advanced into the Round of 16 to highlight the day.
The full singles schedule in Palo Alto was unable to be completed due to a power outage in the area, so three Huskies still have second round singles matches to complete today. Junior Venise Chan, the tourney's third seed, is the only Husky through thus far. Chan had a first round bye, and then overpowered Bianca Modoc of Fresno State, 6-2, 6-0 in the second round.
Still to play are 9th-seeded sophomore Denise Dy, senior Joyce Ardies, and junior Lina Xu. Dy had a first round bye, Ardies shutout Noelle Eades of UC Davis, 6-0, 6-0 in the first round, while Xu fought back from a set down to beat USF's Melinda Akerbrant, 5-7, 6-3, 6-3. Junior Aleksandra Krsljanin also had a first round win but dropped her round two match, 6-3, 6-2, to Kelly Lamble of Santa Clara.
Chan and senior Aleksandra Malovic had the day's biggest win in doubles. After beating a San Jose State team in their first round match, the Husky pair upset the fourth-seeded team of Amy Markhoff and Suzie Matzenauer from Cal Poly, 8-4. Markhoff and Matzenauer are ranked 30th nationally.
Joining Chan and Malovic in the Round of 16 is Dy and Ardies, the third-seeds. UW's top doubles team had a tough time in their second round match against Davis and Pane of Cal Poly, but eventually came through in a tiebreak. Xu and sophomore Samantha Smith also had two-straight 8-3 victories, first over a Pacific tandem and next over a UC Davis duo to make the Round of 16.
The Northwest Regional event is one of 12 individual tournaments throughout the nation over a two-week span and funnels the singles and doubles champions on to the ITA National Indoor Championships next month. Play continues at Stanford through Monday.
