Erdelyi Wins Titan Invitational; USC Takes Second
Oct. 24, 2009
With the Pac-10 Cross Country Championships just a week away, many conference runners are training through the week, some are scaling back their running and others are doing nothing more than adding more stretching to their routine, but not USC junior Zsofia Erdelyi, she competes...and wins. Erdelyi captured the Titan Invitational on Friday (Oct. 23) in Fullerton, Calif. to help lead USC to a second place finish in the last regular season meet for the team.
Erdelyi picked up her first win of the season and fourth career cross country victory by easily out-distancing the field. The native of Hungary won the meet with a season-best time of 17:36, 35 seconds faster than the meet's 2008 winner and 18 seconds ahead of the next fastest finisher this season. The race was a good result for Erdelyi who began the season sidelined with plantar fasciitis and then battled a flu for several weeks. It was decided that one more race might be best for Erdelyi to prepare for the Pac-10 Championships and you can't argue with the results.
The race featured runners from eight college teams and three running clubs, though only four entities had enough runners to count in the team competition. USC placed second to the Cal Coast running club by a score of 28-30, but did have the best score among the college teams. In fact, all five of USC's runners finished among the top 13 collegiate runners.
USC's second runner and eighth overall was freshman Christy Ambrosini who had a season-best 5K time of 18:36. USC's third and fourth runners were also freshman as Theresa Kurth finished 13th with her 2009 best time of 18:51, while Abigail Gregg placed 18th with a time of 19:13.
Junior Allison Rojewski was the final Trojan runner, coming in 30th with a time of 19:55, 50 seconds faster than she ran last season in this race.
There were also many unattached runners in the race including the Trojans' Shelby Buckley who is redshirting this season. The sophomore had the third-fastest time out of all competitors, finishing with a time of 17:59.
USC is hosting the Pac-10 Cross Country Championships on Friday, Oct. 30 at Sky Links Golf Course. The women's race begins at 4 p.m., while the men's race starts at 3 p.m.
