Bruins Blank Beavers, 3-0
Oct. 25, 2009
LOS ANGELES - The fourth-ranked UCLA women's soccer team completed its Pac-10 sweep of the Oregon schools on Sunday, taking a 3-0 victory over Oregon State at Drake Stadium. The Bruins, who also downed Oregon, 5-1 on Friday, improve to 14-2-1 overall and 5-1 in conference play. With the loss, Oregon State falls to 10-5-1 and 2-3 in the Pac-10.
Bruin sophomore Sydney Leroux scored her team-leading 15th goal of the season on Sunday, heading in a Lauren Barnes free kick from about seven yards out to give UCLA an early 1-0 advantage. Leroux, who had two goals in the Bruins' win over Oregon on Friday, has scored in 11 of UCLA's 17 matches this season.
UCLA would take a 2-0 lead in the 66th minute, as Chelsea Cline scored on a close-range shot in front of the Oregon State goal. The play started when Lauren Cheney switched the field, sending a long cross to Zakya Bywaters, who then made a run to the end line. She sent in a low cross that drew out Beaver goalkeeper Colleen Boyd. Boyd was unable to stop the ball, however, giving Cline an open shot from about four yards out.
Junior Liz Zadro capped the scoring for UCLA with her second goal of the year in the 81st minute. Barnes hit a corner kick into the box that was cleared out back out to her. She sent it in again, this time finding the head of Cheney who bounced it off the crossbar. The ball, however, went right to Zadro and she was able to knee it past Boyd from six yards out.
UCLA was wearing pink jerseys on Sunday in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
UCLA rounds out its 2009 home season next Friday, hosting No. 9 USC at 7:00 p.m. That match will be aired live on the Fox Soccer Channel as part of the NSCAA Game of the Week.
