Championship Shot For Sanchez; Consolation Title For Andrews/Entekhabi

Oct. 25, 2009

SAN DIEGO, CAILF. - The USC women's tennis team has made some deep runs through singles and doubles play out at the Wilson/ITA Southwest Regional Championships in San Diego this weekend, and the Trojans powered on in the fourth day of action. Junior Maria Sanchez gutted out a semifinal comeback in singles, taking down UCLA's Andrea Remynse today to take a spot in the title match tomorrow. Sanchez beat Remynse last year in the ITA regional semifinals on her way to winning the title with a victory over teammate Alison Ramos in the 2008 final. Meanwhile, in consolation action, Cristala Andrews and Leyla Entekhabi grabbed the consolation doubles crown, while Andrews and Lyndsay Kinstler also reached the singles consolation semifinals.

In today's singles semifinal, Maria Sanchez went up against a tough No. 6 seed in UCLA's Andrew Remynse. Remynse snagged the first set, but Sanchez powered back and stole the match with a strong next two sets, winning 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. No. 3-seeded Sanchez will go up against another Bruin tomorrow in the championship match, facing UCLA's Yasmin Schnack, who is the No. 2 seed in the tourney.

While Sanchez was doing work in the main draw, several Trojans were gathering up wins in consolation play. Cristala Andrews was doing double duty with singles and doubles action on her plate, and the junior found great success alongside fellow junior Leyla Entekhabi. The pair secure a tight 9-7 win in semifinal play on Saturday before serving up an 8-6 win in today's title match.

In singles, Andrews delivered some decisive wins on her way to a semifinal appearance in consolation play. Her quarterfinal match was a marathon, however. Andrews held strong through two tiebreakers, pinning up a 6-2, 6-7 (3), 7-6 (4) win to move into the semifinals. There, another three-setter was on tap for Andrews, and this time a wild third-set tiebreaker ended up just out of her reach as Stephanie Hoffpauir eked out the win 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (8). On the other side of the consolation bracket, teammate Lyndsay Kinstler was doing similar damage with straight-set wins to ride through to the semifinals as well. There, Kinstler fell in a three-setter to Brooke Bartlett 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.

Maria Sanchez's singles championship match is set for 10 a.m. tomorrow (Oct. 26) in San Diego, Calif.
