Cougars Soccer Defeats California in Overtime
Oct. 25, 2009
PULLMAN, Wash. - Senior Kiersten Dallstream's penalty kick goal in overtime lifted No. 20 Washington State past No. 23 California 2-1 in Pacific-10 Conference women's soccer, Sunday at Lower Soccer Field.
It was the first win in overtime this season for Washington State (11-4-1, 3-1-1 Pac-10). California (8-7-1, 2-4-0 Pac-10) lost in an extra session for the third time in 2009.
'We showed great character, work ethic and desire today,' WSU Head Coach Matt Potter said. 'We were disappointed with our first half to go down a goal. We know against a good team like California you cannot do that. We had an extra gear and competed better in the second half. I thought we showed that with the way we pressed and harassed them.'
Dallstream nearly gave the Cougars a 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute, but her shot caromed off the left post. In the 25th minute, Alex Morgan played a cross into the box from the left side that was touched by Katie Oakes and put home by Lisa Kevorkian who beat WSU goalkeeper Meghan Berlingo from four yards out to give California a 1-0 advantage.
In a match that saw 28 fouls called and four cards issued, WSU sophomore Jacquelyn Roth converted a free kick from 20 yards out in the 62nd minute to tie the match 1-1 after California's Miranda White received a yellow card.
In the 95th minute, WSU senior Carly Dobratz was taken down in the box and a penalty kick was awarded to the Cougars. Dallstream converted the first PK attempt of her WSU career for the game-winner.
The Cougars hit the road against next weekend to face Oregon State at 7:30 p.m., Friday and Oregon at 1 p.m., Sunday.
